As you all know, our new Senate Co-Presidents are Molly Farrugia and Jake Bass. We don’t really see the co-presidents in action outside of collection, so the Quill decided to interview Molly and Jake and find out what they’re like.
What do you think is the greatest quality in a leader?
Molly: It’s necessary to be able to not put yourself ahead of other people and put other people’s ideas first.
Jake: A leader is someone who should put people in front of themselves and know that they’re working for students and not for themselves.
What made you want to be Senate Co-President?
Molly: It’s a position that I’ve always looked up to. The qualities of the past presidents are really admirable and I want to give back to this school.
Jake: I think that I’m a good role model and someone the lowerclassmen can look up to and I have a lot to give back to the school.
Why do you think that you are the best person to be Senate Co-President?
Molly: I’ve been here a long time and I love this school and care about it so much. I just wanted to do something for this school and give back.
Jake: I’ve held multiple leadership positions in and out of school and I feel that I’m a good listener. I know there are some people who are better qualified than I am for Senate Co-President.
What do you think is the role of a Senate Co-President?
Molly: Somebody that is passionate about their job and acts as a liaison between the students and faculty. Someone who is open to ideas and boosts morale and knows the student body. I think being a morale booster is important.
Jake: Be someone who lowerclassmen can look up to. Someone who is working for the students.
How do you plan to make senate better?
Molly: I think senate has to be a little more organized. Being in senate for two years I also think we need to updated the moodle page and have that be something students can go to when they need information. Senate has always felt like some exclusive club and I would like to have more students come in with ideas. But senate is already very sound.
Jake: Not much needs to be changed in senate. Maybe there needs to be more fundraising ideas. I also think there should be better communication between those in senate and the students. I think social networks would be a good way to let students know what’s going on.
How did you feel when you found out you won?
Molly: I really wasn’t that stressed about it since I ran unopposed but I really wanted to feel like I deserved this and I felt like I needed to prove myself.
Jake: I was really nervous before I found out. I was stressing about it all weekend. When I found out, I was really excited. I texted my mom and my parents were really proud of me when they found out.
Molly and Jake are amazing people and I know that they will be great Senate Co-Presidents! I hope you will all join me in wishing Molly and Jake good luck.
