Russian for Fun has been an yearly affair at Friends for the past ten years. Lower School students come to Ms. Roby’s room twice a week to learn and do small group activities in Russian. For the Friends community, this has not only been a chance for Upper School Russian students to gain teaching experience under the guidance of a trained Russian teacher, but has also acted as a feeder for the Middle School Russian program. This year, Ben Sherbakov ‘18, in order to set up an internship component for his ECP certificate in Global Studies, and Ms. Roby have reached out to City Neighbors Charter school and their Lower School student to help them develop a foreign language program. Students interested in helping out with Russian for Fun this year had a chance on Quaker Community Day to go teach a small Russian lesson to the 4th and 5th grade. This acted as a practice session for the student teachers in preparation for the Russian for Fun season. Ms. Roby, having run the program since 2006, is confident that most of the kinks have been worked out and says that “It will take a bit more coordination on my part, but that is a small price to pay for the increased benefits.” Ben and Ms. Roby, along with parents of the incoming students are excited to help City Neighbors start up a foreign language program. Both students and parents have been pushing for a language option, but up until now it had been impossible to get a budget to do so. Starting this winter, student from City Neighbors will be carpooling to join our Lower Schoolers in the Russian for Fun class. Depending on the success of this partnership, Ben will be continuing the program as an after-school activity in the spring. This program will hopefully develop into a stronger connection between our two communities and act as a way for more students to be active in learning Russian at both City Neighbors and Friends.
