On Wednesday, September 13th, I sat down with Ms. Carlin, our new Athletic Director, to talk about her role in the community, her plans for this year, and her experience with school sports.

If you’re like me, you may not be familiar with the vital work an Athletic Director does in our community. As Ms. Carlin told me, she “…oversees all aspects of the athletic program including personnel, facilities, programs, and offerings ensure alignment with the philosophy, values, and mission of Friends School.” She explained it to me by telling me that she “…has been a coach for twenty years, since [she] graduated college” and that this is the first time since then that she is not directly coaching student athletes.

So how did Ms. Carlin come to Friends School? In college at Franklin and Marshall, she was a business major with a minor in accounting. When she graduated in 1998, she used her own experience of playing college sports to become a girls’ field hockey and lacrosse coach at Bowdoin and, later, Goucher. There, she got her Masters’ degree in athletic administration, a necessary step in preparing to be an Athletic Director. After Goucher, she worked at St. Timothy’s, a boarding school on Greenspring Avenue, for 11 years. When it became known that Mr. Whitley, the last Athletic Director, was preparing to retire, candidate interviews began. By the end of the 2016-2017 school year, we knew who the new Athletic Director would be, but we didn’t know what she was planning for her first year.

When I asked Ms. Carlin if she had changed anything about the FSB sports scene, she listed off goals and programs she was implementing. First, she told me about introducing professional development programs for coaches, with a focus on positive coaching. We’ve already seen her monthly athletic message to parents and students. She also talked about using the fun atmosphere of Friday Night Basketball to encourage students to watch other sports. Last year, we had Lacrosse under the Lights and Friday Night Wrestling. A Friday night game for volleyball has already been announced and more sports are sure to follow.

Last year, some girls’ sports teams felt that they were being ignored or undervalued in comparison to their male counterparts. When asked about this, Ms. Carlin explained her plan to get more female athletes involved with Quaker Nation, to increase awareness of girls’ sports, and to use Friday nights to draw an audience to underrepresented teams.

The goal of interviews like these is to help students get to know the new faculty members, especially those in positions as important as Athletic Director. When asked to describe herself, Ms. Carlin told me about her lifelong love of watching and coaching sports, her long-time support of Friends School (since her older daughter, Bryce (‘21), stepped foot on campus 11 years ago), and her personal goal of revamping the school spirit around our rivalry with Park School (remember Ruin the Bruin?).  Ms. Carlin is married to History teacher and creator of the Extra-disciplinary Certificate Program, Mr. Carlin, and has two children who attend Friends School, Bryce Carlin (‘21) and Quinn Carlin (‘23). I think we are in for an exciting new year of sports at Friends and I can’t wait to see Ms. Carlin’s plans come to fruition.
