On September 12th at 4:30 pm, players on the IAMM varsity soccer team (for female and non-binary identifying athletes) got their shin guards on and took the field in their black and red uniforms.
Last fall, Friends’ IAAM varsity soccer team won the C conference championship. Now in the B conference, they are focused on following that success.
Daryn Barnes scored the first goal within minutes, setting the tone for the rest of the team. Seven more goals followed soon after. Despite the scorching 80-degree heat, the Quakers fought hard to keep Benjamin Franklin High School’s Bayhawks to 0 points.
The stands were full of parents and other athletes cheering for the Quakers. The Boy’s Soccer teams watched with excitement, sprinting down the sidelines in anticipation of another Quaker goal. The raucous support encouraged the girls to give their all on the field and continue their reign over the game.
By halftime Friends was up 5-0. This high-scoring first half allowed the entire team to get in the game and show off their skills.
“We did a really good job at lifting up our teammates, and celebrating each other’s success,” said senior and captain Elaina Pearce. “That makes me so excited for this season!”
On Rivalry Day, September 28th, the team faces The Park School of Baltimore head to head on Park’s campus. Students and parents packed the stands in their scarlet and gray clothing, cheering on the team – which won 5 to 0!
As the season goes on, there are six more games for the team to play – and possibly, another championship title.
