Despite a torrential downpour on September 16th, the Friends Girls Varsity Soccer team prevailed against Chapelgate Christian Academy, winning 11-3 after multiple stoppages.
The game began at 4 pm, with Daryn Barnes ’26 scoring in the first 40 seconds. Minutes later, Amira Dancer ’26 doubled the lead off a corner kick. Friends scored again shortly after, and Chapelgate Christian replied before the delay.
Twenty-seven minutes in, a clap of thunder delayed the game for the first time. This stopped the momentum that the Friends team was gaining. After the 30-minute waiting period, the game was interrupted by another clap of thunder and was delayed again.
The game finally resumed at 5:10 pm. As the teams ran out of the gym to get started, they were met with a cold, forceful shower of rain. At this time, the game was 3-1. The Quakers struggled while adapting to the puddles of water on the turf.
The game transformed from a showcase of skill into a contest of balance. The Yellowjackets and Quakers went into halftime drenched, with a score of 4-2. Due to the delay, the halftime was changed to a brief water break.
The Quakers quickly returned to the game, still trying to stay afloat while maintaining their lead. The turf was slick, but the Quakers continued to score goals. Addie Oakes ‘28 scored two, Lailah Carter ‘27 scored one, Indigo Mosely ‘26 scored one, Amira scored another to add to her first – and Daryn ended the game with a total of five.
Chapelgate tried to hold on, but it just wasn’t enough. Even with waterlogged cleats, the Quakers held on to their lead, winning 11-3.
